Edouard Manet

Edouard Manet was an artist and a flaneur which was a man-about-town with no occupation, strolling the city, studying and experiencing it coolly and dispassionately. Edward Manet's vulgar and materialistic lifestyle in contempt was shocking to the bourgeoisie but shocking them was his devotion.

Many of Manet’s painting were rejected by the jury for the Salon of 1863 but they did appear in the Salon des Refuses which was an exhibition ordered by Louis-Napoleon after complaints about the number of rejected artworks.

Luncheon on the Grass (1863). A painting from Edouard Manet which was rejected from the salon of 1863. The ,am on the right making the hand gesture was said to be Manet's future brother in law. Painting caused scandal because of its sexuality but Manet stated that he didn't design it to please anyone.

Olympia (1863). Another painting from Edouard Manet which was exposed in the Salon of 1865. The woman in the painting is said to be a woman out of work who turned to prostitution. It has been said that she was a prostitute by the position of her left hand and especially by her gaze. This is the same woman used in the painting Luncheon on the Grass.
