The
bourgeois crowds on the grand boulevards were the audience to a poet named Charles
Baudelaire. His poetry was attacked because it contained unconventional themes and subject
matter. His poetry simply shocked the bourgeois crowds.

In August
1857 Baudelaire faced charges for his book of 100 poems the “Flowers of Evil.” He
was fined and forced to remove six poems about lesbianism and vampirism.
